In this video I walk you through some of the new 3D Type options in Photoshop CS6.
Adobe has produced a vastly simplified user interface to intuitively create and animate 3D artwork. They’ve done away with the complex 3D tools of previous versions, and now everything actually makes sense, they even give us an actual 3D workspace!

5 Things Adobe Got Right For 3D Type This Time:
- Simple to find, easy to use. Once you start a type layer the 3D option immediately becomes available.
No more Repossue, or whatever Adobe was calling it before. - Direct on layer click and drag functionality. It’s simple enough to position things exactly how you want them. Especially if you are used to tools like Cinema 4D.
- Click and Drag Shadows and Lighting. Easy to use and get immediate results
- Fast performance and Renders. I’m on a less than $400 Asus Laptop and if you watch my video, you’ll see that even on my machine the performance is blazing fast, especially compared to the CS5 version. Keep in mind I do still have 8GB of Ram in this machine!
- The type remains editable. You can change the color and the words easily and instantly, even the font all on the fly in real time.
Personally I love it. Then again I love nearly everything about this latest version of Photoshop. Adobe finally answered a lot of the issues designers have been bringing to their attention for years. The new 3D tools are definitely a step in the right direction. The new 3D tools aren’t limited to Type by the way, they work great with paths and vector shapes. You can see an example below. At the bottom of this article are 2 videos that you can watch showing the actual 3D tools in action. One was made by me the other comes directly from Adobe.
